About Carcassonne

Carcassonne in Languedoc-Roussillon is a unique dual personality of a city. The upper town is the original fortified medieval village that remains intact the atmosphere nowadays. The lower city is an urban network of shops, restaurants and warm places. Story: one of the great Cathar cities was divided in two when the heretics were expelled and could only return if they built their own city on the banks of the Aude.

Château Comtal is a medieval castle located in the City of Carcassonne, the largest city in Europe with its remaining ramparts. The medieval city is in the modern city of Carcassonne in the Aude, which Carcassonne is the prefecture, in the former province of Languedoc.

Catharism

In the 12th century, a new religion took roots in Europe, which we now know as Catharism.

The Cathars were Gnostic Christians. They claimed that their believes and practices dated back to early Christian times and predate the innovations of the Catholic Church – an assertion that is now recognized by historians as essentially correct. They had survived in Persia and had gradually moved westward through the Byzantine Empire, the Balkans and Italy to Western Europe.

The Catholic Church considered Cathars to be heretics. It was then a crime to disagree with the Catholic theology and a major crime if the disagreement was repeated.

Cathars appeared throughout Europe, but it was in Languedoc that they flourished, becoming the majority religion in many places. After many unsuccessful attempts to convert them by preaching and debating, Pope Innocent III launched a large-scale crusade against them.
